Frugal Tip of the Day

Today is the big reveal! How much does a family of 7-10 people spend on toilet paper a week? I have the records of how much we have spent since January of 2002. It seems like a really high number! We have spent $5226.99 on toilet paper! Isn’t that awful? That figures out at an average of $9.14 a week! In our defense, we did have 10 people here until about 4 years ago when 3 of our kids moved out on their own, so that’s a lot of people!

So, toilet paper does seem to be a necessity, doesn’t it? And we like the good stuff, not the cheap stuff! I usually buy Charmin. It seems like the best deal to me is Charmin Basic and I buy the $8.00 pack that has four 4-packs in it. I usually get it at Dollar General. There are just so many choices in toilet paper that it’s hard to figure out what actually is the best deal.

I remember when I was a kid (and I came from a family with 8 kids too!) that my dad would talk to us about how much toilet paper we used. He would tell us how many squares we should count off and everything! Well, I actually started doing that with my kids too! I’ve threatened to ration their toilet paper usage a few times! Now I know how my dad felt…he was probably just trying to save a nickel back then!

So my frugal tip of the day? I don’t know…you can buy cheaper toilet paper, but then you might end up using more. You could make sure you use the bathroom before you come home from work…that might save a little! Go visit family and friends and make sure you use their bathroom before you go home! Naw…just kidding! If you have a frugal tip for what kind of toilet paper to buy or how to ration it just leave a message in the comments!

  1. I like the good stuff too. I don't feel it's worth the savings to buy the cheaper stuff. you just end up using more...or suffering

  2. You could be really frugal and use cloth "toilet paper" and recycle by washing, kinda like diapers. I am a firm believer in reusing things as much as possible, but I draw the line at cloth toilet paper that I have to wash. I was done with diapers a long time ago and have no desire to return there. If you look on frugal web sites some folks are all about cloth toilet paper. Now with just the two of us it is amazing how long a pack of toilet paper lasts.
