Latest Sales and a Big Mess Up!

Hello! Just thought I would post a few sales I've had over the past couple of weeks.

I bought this coat last fall and it finally sold. It is leather and I think I started it a lot higher but kept lowering it. I probably should have just held my ground on the higher price, especially with fall coming around again.

Ladies Leather Coat
Paid $2.69 - Sold for $19.95 - Profit $14.71

I sold 2 sets of hot rollers this past week. One for $19.95 and then this one for $24.95. I have 3 more sets for sale!

Windmere Hot Rollers
Paid $4.38 - Sold for $24.95 - Profit $15.62

This mirror was an extra big vanity mirror that could either sit on the dresser or stand up like a picture frame. Very pretty!

Big Vanity Mirror
Paid $3.00 - Sold for $21.95 - Profit $11.52

Found these ladies Thorogood motorcycle boots for $2.00 at a yard sale. I'd love to get into selling more things like these!

Women's Motorcycle Boots
Paid $2.00 - Sold for $59.95 - Profit $49.62

Found this talking Eeyore at Goodwill a few months ago. It was $8.38 so I looked it up and it looked like I should be able to sell it for at least $50. I had it listed for a long time starting at $59.95 with best offer. It just wouldn't sell or even get any offers. I finally lowered the price and took an offer of $24.95...I made a profit of $11.89.

I really messed up on this next item.

I bought it a yard sale a few weeks ago. I had asked this little old lady how much she wanted for it and she said $2.00. I was debating on whether or not I even wanted it so I put it down and she asked what I wanted to pay for it so I said a dollar and she took it. I felt kinda bad dickering with her, like I was taking advantage of an older person or something. Anyway, I listed it for $12.00 and it sold a couple of days ago. When I got it all boxed up and ready to go I started the label process and realized that I had put the weight as 3 pounds. I just knew that this box was going to weigh more than 3 pounds...it was 4 pounds 12 ounces! What was I thinking?!! I think what happened is that sometimes when I'm entering information and change it, it goes back to what it was before, especially with the weight and then the shipping service offered...does this happen to anyone else? So naturally the customer had chosen priority shipping and it was going to California! Priority shipping for the size of box I had was going to cost $26!! I hadn't even collected that amount with the shipping charge! The shipping paid was $11.59....for a 3 pound box that would be a little bit smaller it would have been enough. So I proceed to undo the box (I had it wrapped it paper besides) and then cut it down a little bit to get it in under the wire. I cut flaps off and everything! Spent way too long on this one. I did get it to where it cost $15.89 for shipping but that was still $4.30 more than I collected! So I ended up making a whopping $3 profit on it....that's what I get for taking advantage of a little old lady! :) Has anyone else ever had to revamp their packaging to try to pay less for the postage. I know I've had it happen a few times before. I really do try to be careful when I'm listing to figure it all right but I guess sometimes things just get messed up!

Thanks for stopping by! ~~Pam

  1. Hi Pam,
Wow you had some nice sales, especially those motorcycle boots!
Oh yeah I have had to redo packaging a few times to keep the postage down. Just the other day I was cutting flaps down on a priority box to keep an item at 2 pounds that I gave free shipping on. Then there was the time I listed a pack of sewing machine needles as free shipping priority mail & meant to list free first class, it was a low profit item as it was & I lost money on that one, but I figured I said priority I better send it that way. Have a good weekend!

  2. Oh, Pam, you are definitely not alone! This happens to me more often than I care to admit LOL. Some buyers are quick to catch these shipping "discounts". I finally bought a really neat box cutter to help when I'm cutting off flaps and resizing boxes to keep within my listed shipping cost. I made a huge boo-boo one time when I had a bunch of jeans that I listed on clearance for 99-cents at auction - but I forgot to change the shipping from FREE. I didn't even realize my error until the auctions ended! So, you see, you are not alone!

  3. Okay, so that listing form is full of booby traps. When you change a price, it sometimes goes back to what it was originally. When you change from flat rate to calculated shipping, it automatically checks free shipping. When you change from auction to BIN and you want to change it from a 7 days listing to a 30 days listing, it jumps back to 7 days. You have to wait a few seconds for every entry to configure and make sure it's right before you proceed. When I listed stuff for hubby, it kept checking global shipping and I had to uncheck it every single time. There are so many traps and pitfalls that I pity new sellers.

And yes, I have cut flaps, gone from boxes to padded mailers, whatever it takes to get something from 4 lbs 1 ounce down to 3 lbs 15.9 ounces. I always have to figure my paper label and the clear tape I put over the label adds another ounce.

  4. I was hoping you did get $50 for the Eeyore I know I've screwed up on pricing some of my Plush! I've had this happen! IT's never fun---even if you guess boxed and padded it will weight 2 lbs it may come out to 2 lbs and 2 oz. that puts you up to the next lb! That's where I mess up a lot. I removed my newspaper packing this morning and replaced it with plastic bags to lighten the weight to get it back to 2 lbs exact.

Weird: I follow another blog called the Nickle and Dime Ranch, the tow of you have the exact same background on your pages..how cool!

  5. I've messed up more than once. There have been a few times when I not only didn't make a profit, but I went in the hole to cover the shipping cost that I didn't calculate properly. Those motorcycle boots were a great sale! :)

  6. Yes. I've been guilty of the same. It's a learning experience.

  7. I may be doing it all wrong and costing myself sales, but I always choose economy shipping. I figure I can always go up from there if I want and the customer won't complain, but not down. And quite often, I use priority mail flat rate. But I have misjudged weight and shipping and had to eat costs.

  8. This has happened to me before too. We all learn from our mistakes. I also weigh my items and then usually add more than a pound for packaging (usually 2 lbs for the bigger/heaver stuff).
